I want to be an author. Any advice?

If you want to be an author, then you are already off to a good start. Remember to stick with your goal and don’t let anyone talk you out of it. Sometimes writing can get pretty discouraging.  Just remember that most authors have had rejections of some kind.  That is part of a writer’s life. The best advice I can give is to have fun with your writing and follow these 3 rules:

1. Write
2. Write
3. Write

The more you write the stronger your writing will become. Remember to reread what you have written, and read out loud. That will give you an idea of the rhythm of your writing. Look at some of the words you have used. Do they help to paint a picture in your mind? If not, try to find words that will help the reader visualize your story. Of course, reading other authors’ work is another good way to improve your own style. Read everything you can get your hands on.

Another idea, if you haven’t already done this, is to start a journal. Whenever you wonder something or imagine something, get into the habit of writing it down. Listen to how kids speak and practise writing conversations. When you are not writing, let your mind wander. You’ll be amazed at how well you can imagine when you give your imagination permission to go out on its own. And don’t forget to look at everyday situations through a writer’s eye. If someone walks into the room, imagine where they have been, or where they are going. Create a profile in your mind of what the person looks like and sounds like. Notice the way they walk. When you begin to write you will need lots of descriptive phrases and words.

Writing is hard work, but it is so much fun. Enjoy!
